In March of 2006 DoC staff were evacuated from Raoul Island after a 40 second volcanic eruption at the Green Lake. Thirty-three-year-old Mark Kearney was taking water temperature measurements at the time and his body has never been found. Further north in the mid Pacific the tiny island nation of Tokelau voted to remain a New Zealand territory after a referendum on independence was held. Though 60 percent of the population voted in favor of independence, a two-thirds majority was required for the referendum to succeed.
