It's the 25th anniversary of the Pasifika Festival, and RNZ's film guy, Dan Slevin has been delving into the films set in the Pacific over the last few decades... and has concluded that Hollywood has had some rather strange ideas about this region.

Venus of the South Seas (1924) - Annette Kellerman as a pearl diver. Actually shot in Nelson, NZ, by a US company.
Sadie Thompson (1928) - Pago Pago - Gloria Swanson (also made as Rain in 1932 with Joan Crawford and musical Miss Sadie Thompson in 1953 with Rita Hayworth)
Moana (1926) - Samoa - Flaherty now restored
RNZ's Standing Room Only recently did a feature on the restoration of this silent era classic.
White Shadows in the South Seas (1928) - Tahiti for real! Flaherty again
South Sea Rose (1929) - based on a stage play called La Gringa!
