The Forest Lifeforce Restoration Trust run one of the most prolific kiwi breeding programmes in the country and are doing all they can on the same swathe of land to bring back some plant life from the brink of extinction.
The Trust owns a 4,000-hectare former pine forest inland from Hawke's Bay where they are reintroducing native species which in turn is encouraging native wildlife.
"If you can take a pretty cruddy pine forest and turn it into lush, regenerating native forest, it’s a real buzz,” says trustee Peter Shaw.
