Opoutere, a small Coromandel community just north of Whangamata, is a holiday hot spot.
Many visitors stay in a youth hostel that's become something of a landmark in the town. But now it looks like the hostel may be shut down for good, following a decision by the youth hostel association.
Fans of the hostel, both local and international, have began a petition to save it, which has now has more than 1500 signatures.
David Wildish is one of those fans, five generations of his family have stayed at the hostel which they regard as a second home.
