Carpooling is now massively popular in Europe so when Melissa Cohen moved from France to New Zealand two years ago she was surprised to find it hasn't yet taken off here.
She and a group of NZ-based French friends have decided to do something about it, launching the new website Easy As Carpooling.
While Smart Travel NZ is already working to get commuters sharing rides, Easy As is nationwide and aimed at both commuters and international travellers, Melissa says.
"Lots of backpackers are looking to share the cost and have an experience with locals."
The Easy As security policy includes identity verification via mobile and email and a rating system.
Drivers and riders also have the option of checking each other's IDs when they meet in person.
One passenger travelling between Auckland and Wellington pays $36 for the ride – plus a $1 booking fee and GST.
While Easy As takes a cut of each ride fee to cover costs, they're not out to make money, Melissa says.
"The idea is to share the costs and save money together."
