Stewart Collie is a science team leader at AgResearch, but also a sock guru. He celebrates this often overlooked and derided Christmas gift.

He says it has to perform in a unique and harsh environment of elevated heat and moisture, and high impact mechanical forces, because the shoe is often a highly occluded environment with an impermeable outer layer, making it hard for moisture to escape.

He also tells us what material makes the best socks.
