Many of us take basic abilities for granted - like being able to do our times tables, use a computer, write cogently or read easily. And we've long forgotten how challenging it may have been to acquire those skills initially.
When you DON'T have a high level of proficiency in relatively basic skills, it can be embarrassing to admit it - even though this problem affects MANY more people than you may think .
So, adult literacy groups are springing up around the country, hoping to de-stigmatize that process.
