Building community resilience

From Afternoons, 2:27 pm on 26 March 2020

During the Covid-19 lockdown, we need to work together to make sure social distancing doesn't become social isolation, says Wellington mediator Tim Foote.

This week, he published a guide to getting your street connected.

The idea is to create an accessible neighbourhood network – via a private Facebook page and telephone directory – which locals can tap into if they want to, Tim says.

All you'll need is:

  • A reasonable knowledge of how to use Google Docs, Gmail, and Facebook
  • A printer (or a lot of patience and reasonably legible handwriting!)
  • Appropriate safety gear to wear while delivering invitations - for example, gloves and a mask - and a clear understanding of hygiene guidelines.
  • A few hours of time to get things set up

Tim has set up a community network in the Wellington suburb of Vogeltown where he and his family moved a few months ago.

"The better connected we are, the healthier we are," he says.
