Auckland band FRED were originally 'Girl Named Fred' after a friend's female dog.
Three band members live in a 22-person Parnell flat known affectionately as the Big House, and the band originally formed to play at the flat's epic annual house party, singer Jesse Sheehan tells Jesse Mulligan.
The Big House is one of the oldest surviving urban communal living spaces in New Zealand, Sheehan says.
They even have a cooking roster, with teams of three cooking together for the whole flat.
"It's quite hostel-like, but most people have been there a good few years. One member, Logie, has been there for 26 years."
FRED have just released their second single 'Rollercoaster'.
