Pidge the kererū returns home after 24 years

It's been 24 years since 'Pidge' the kererū left the safety of the sanctuary but out of the blue, in poor health, he's returned to the place he knew he would get help.

Emma Bean, the National Kiwi Hatchery manager at the Rainbow Springs Nature Park in Rotorua, tells Jesse how he's faring.

When Pidge arrived back at the sanctuary he was weak and his feathers were a little filthy.

But he's been resting and recovering and he's now able to perch again.

He's also getting stronger, he's regained 15% of his body weight

In other exciting news - this rare white tummied kiwi chick named Bloom was born at the sanctuary last week
