Critter of the Week: The Hairy Kelp Fly

From Afternoons, 3:35 pm on 1 July 2022

This week’s critter loves stinky seaweed - the rottener, the better! The hairy kelp fly (Chaetocoelopa littoralis) feeds, mates, and breeds in the wrack zone of our beaches, putting up with harsh wind, rain, and sun.

They don’t mind the cold and can be found rollicking on any respectable clump of rotting seaweed throughout the year.
