Sheryl Mai has served as Whangarei Mayor for the past three terms - a job her younger self would never have imagined.
It has been a challenging but rewarding nine years - probably most notably marked by the construction of the city's controversial Hundertwasser Museum.
She talks to Jesse about her time in the top job and what she enjoys in her down time.
