Words have power. And you never know when something you say to a child will influence their lives forever. Everyday interactions may seem small, but they can play a big part in shaping our identity. A conversation Dr Mesmin Destin had with an adult when was 16 has stayed with him forever. Now he’s a social psychologist and professor of human development and social policy Northwestern University in Chicago. His research over the past 15 years shows how the right kind of encouragement at the right time can play a powerful part in filling the gap between the dreams we have for our future, and reality.
