After numerous setbacks, construction on Ngāti Te Whiti hapu's long-awaited Ngāmotu Marae will get underway this year. New Plymouth has been without a Marae for 150 years.

The new Marae will contain a wharenui and wharekai, plus spaces for meetings, conferences, workshops and education. Shelton Healey is Ngāti Te Whiti Hapu Society vice chair and Ngāti Te Whiti Whenua Trust board member. He says the marae is about creating whakawhanaungatanga or togetherness.

Work towards realising Ngāti te Whiti's waterfront marae was one of the Whanake Grant applications that came up well short.
