New Zealand's worst rail accident 60th anniversary
Christmas eve 2013 marks 60 years since New Zealand's worst rail accident, and sixth most deadly disaster. 151 people died when the locomotive and first six carriages of the overnight express from Wellington to Auckland plunged into the Whangaehu River just north of Tangiwai in the central North Island at 10.21pm. Graham Stewart was a cadet photographer with the New Zealand Herald and covered the disaster. His photos are included in the book 'The Tangiwai Disaster: A Christmas Eve Tragedy'.
