Brigadier (Retired) Dr Brian Thomas McMahon CBE KStJ KCLJ is the Anzac of the year 2011, an award established by the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association (RNZRSA). A former Director General Defence Force Medical Services with 40 years military experience, he served in Malaysia, Vietnam, United Kingdom and Singapore. He is also a medical lecturer at Otago Medical School, patron of the NZ Vietnam Health Trust and a member of the Leprosy Trust Board Fiji.

The first ANZAC ceremony

On Anzac Day 1916, the world's first Anzac ceremony was held on a rugged hillside overlooking the village of Tinui in the Wairarapa. Reverend Basil Ashcroft erected a wooden cross on the hill. It became the first memorial in the world permanently dedicated to the Anzacs killed at Gallipoli in World War I.

Gallipoli study

Archaeologists have made some surprising discoveries in the first-ever joint Australian, Turkish and New Zealand survey of the Anzac battlefield. The findings include 12 cemeteries, concrete boundary markers and evidence of tunnels created during the Gallipoli campaign. Not only do the findings tell us about tactics used during the campaign, they also give us a glimpse of what like was like for our troops on that infamous battlefield.
