Having grown up in both Malaysia and China, Liyen Chong migrated to New Zealand in her mid-teens and completed her MFA at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in Christchurch. She moved to Auckland in late 2005 and since then has exhibited regularly in New Zealand and Australia.
She was awarded the prestigious McCahon House Artist's Residency earlier this year and her work is present in major collections such as the Chartwell Collection and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. Chong is represented by dealers in Auckland, Wellington and Sydney. She gained significant recognition for her conceptual works featuring embroidery with human hair and is currently undergoing an exciting period of transition with her art practice.
