New Kiwi Women Write Their Stories
What if you’ve published prolifically in your country of origin and in your own language but find yourself completely isolated here as a new migrant writer? It would be especially challenging if English is a second language and you’re also experiencing the isolation of resettlement.
Earlier this year a series of writing workshops for migrant women in the area was initiated by the Auckland City Council and Albany Newcomers Network. The workshops run by Renee Liang, Janet Charman and Sarah Laing were facilitated by Matt Blomeley and took place at the Albany Community Centre with a resulting publication titled New Beginnings. In this week’s Asian Report Lynda meets five of the thirteen writers in Auckland, who won’t let cultural or language barriers get in their way.
