AT THE MOVIES #908 LOSING INTEREST IN OSCAR
Simon Morris wonders if there’s any point to awards these days. He also checks out the front-runner for Best Actor, a collection of First Nation stories from both Australia and Aotearoa, and a thriller about a coming apocalypse.
The Whale sees the triumphant return of former action star Brendan Fraser (The Mummy) in a very different role as a morbidly obese English teacher. Directed by Darren Arinowski (Black Swan) it features two Oscar-nominated roles – Fraser and Hong Chau (The menu).
We are still here – eight writer-director teams, eight stories about First Nation struggles in New Zealand and Australia. It premiered at last year’s International Film Festival.
And Knock at the Cabin, M Night Shyamalan’s (The Sixth Sense) apocalyptic tale of four strange visitors to a family home, with a challenge to save the planet. Stars Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Rupert Grint (Harry Potter) and Nikki Amuka-Bird (The personal history of David Copperfield)
