Science teachers warn of national problems from poor science results
High school science teachers say they're alarmed that most students are arriving with a sub-standard science education, and it could have dire consequences. Results from the National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement show that by the time children finish Year 8, they are doing worse in science than any other subject - with just 20 percent reaching the expected level of achievement. Science educators say science loses out to numeracy and literacy in New Zealand schools, but the country needs a science-literate population more than ever.
