A person is dead after a yacht sank off the Northland coast on Monday afternoon.
Police say a mayday call was received shortly after midday after the 47-foot sloop got into trouble in bad weather about 37 kilometres off Cape Brett.
Russell Radio volunteer Anna Huggett has been following developments.
Police have subsequently confirmed that one person died and another person is in a critical condition in hospital.
The remaining people who were on board are in moderate condition and are being treated by ambulance paramedics.
Police say it is too early to speculate what caused the boat to sink.
