Any indoor gathering of more than 100 people is banned from today, the latest measure in the fight against Covid-19.
The new directive does not apply to schools, workplaces, supermarkets, or public transport.
The Health Minister David Clark made the announcement at Parliament, saying people should regard this as part of the "new normal".
Meanwhile, pressure is ratcheting up on the government for tougher action with the Opposition leader now calling for the border to be closed for non-New Zealand citizens and permanent residents.
