Doctors fear a rise in the potentially devastating childhood disease rheumatic fever could get worse as the effects of the Covid-19 lockdown hit.
A public health alert has been issued for Wellington after a sudden spike in the number of children with disease there this year.
But there could be more cases brewing that haven't yet come to light.
