Students claim teacher tore down Black Lives Matter posters

From Checkpoint, 6:26 pm on 8 June 2020

A group of students at an elite Christchurch private school say a teacher tore down posters and verbally abused them for promoting the Black Lives Matter movement.

The students at St Andrew's College, in Strowan, put up posters raising awareness about the movement last week.

However, they say they were shocked when a female staff member ripped off a number of posters and stamped on them while swearing at the Year 13 students for their actions.

The school is investigating the incident. Christchurch reporter Anan Zaki spoke to one of the students, on the condition of anonymity, and started by asking why they began putting up the posters.

The school's rector Christine Leighton told RNZ in statement that an investigation is underway into the incident and support has been offered to the students.

She says the school is committed to treating all people equally and fairly.
