Police Commissioner Andrew Coster says incident which left one police officer dead was fast moving and unpredictable.
He says the offender fired multiple shots at officers. Both officers were struck, one fatally.
Coster says police are speaking to two people after today's fatal shooting.
He says they are "people of interest".
Police have recovered a firearm.
At this stage, the general arming of police in Auckland continues until "we are satisfied we have the people we are looking for," Coster said.
"A large number of police from across Tamaki Makaurau" as well as the Armed Offenders Squad are involved in the hunt for the perpetrators.
Police are speaking to two people of interest. Coster says officers spotted a vehicle of interest this morning and attempted to stop it.
The car was later found crashed on Reynella Dr. A man got out with a long barrelled firearm and shot two officers.
