Five arrested in effort to stop native trees being cut down

From Checkpoint, 6:26 pm on 21 July 2020

Seasoned activist and Green Party candidate Steve Abel is among five people who were arrested on Tuesday while protesting the felling of mature native trees in Auckland.

Thirty native trees on a Canal Road property in Avondale are set to be downed, following the sale of the property. Protestors say 16 have already been given the chop and protestors and police were on the site again today.

Abel had a close call today when a tree being felled crashed into the tree he was perched in.

He is among five protestors who were arrested, but he told our reporter Jean Bell he has no regrets.
