From Checkpoint, 5:47 pm on 8 September 2020

Aucklanders could be fined up to $400 for chucking their single use face masks on the streets after an increase in face coverings littering the super city's streets, Auckland Council says.

At Covid-19 level 2 the masks are compulsory on public transport and people are being encourage to wear them in situations where they cannot social distance.

The council says its rubbish collectors have noticed more masks discarded in parks, reserves and on the streets.

We sent RNZ reporter Katie Doyle and cameraman Dan Cook out onto the streets to see how people are getting on with "masking-up".

Auckland Councillor Richard Hills says fines are a last resort but says Aucklanders need to lift their game.
