Green MP under pressure as second MIQ emergency bid revealed

From Checkpoint, 5:31 pm on 24 February 2021

Green MP Ricardo Menendez March is having to explain himself again, after it emerged he tried twice for an emergency spot in MIQ.

The new MP travelled to Mexico over summer, to care for his sick parents. Greens co-leader Marama Davidson and whip Jan Logie okayed the trip overseas.

Menendez March applied for an emergency MIQ spot when trying to return to New Zealand - which was declined.

It's now been revealed he tried again.. citing national security reasons. The Green MP says the criteria wasn't clear, but he was just making use of the options available to him.

Menendez March says he made the second application because he thought he might fit the national security criteria.

Green Party co-leader James Shaw, who told MBIE not to approve his MP's request for an emergency spot, says officials were right to deny him on the second attempt too.
