Two Auckland isolation hotels are being emptied of returnees pending an investigation into how Covid-19 was transmitted inside the facilities.
Genome sequencing show the virus spread between two returnees at the Grand Mecure - they arrived back on different flights, days apart.
And in a different outbreak, a returnee, a cleaner and two security guards at the Grand Millennium are also in the same chain of transmission.
There are 224 isolating returnees across both hotels and once they all complete MIQ there will be a review of into potential sources of spread at facilities, including the ventilation systems.
