New Zealand's four-stage Covid-19 alert level system is no longer fit for purpose, according to a group of epidemiologists.
The six experts say while the system was a highly effective part our pandemic response, it has not kept pace with new evidence and more sophisticated responses to recent outbreaks, or the needs of Māori.
They are proposing a seven-level alert system starting at zero - when everything is normal. And up to level 6 - a lockdown forced by an uncontrolled community outbreak.
Professor Michael Baker is one of the epidemiologists proposing the new system. He talks to Lisa Owen.
