Police are promising to be out in big numbers for the level four lockdown, telling people the rules will be enforced.
They made eight arrests at anti-lockdown protests in several areas of the country.
They're also warning they'll be checking people's travel is for essential purposes only.
Police Commissioner Andrew Coster says police have turned around about 200 vehicles heading to Coromandel.
“We turned around a lot of vehicles at a checkpoint in Coromandel and it was very disappointing to see people heading towards the place that's been identified as the hotspot.
“We turned around approximately 200 vehicles. We have some more statistics tomorrow morning but there are a lot of vehicles that we turned around.”
