At 12am Wednesday some Waikato residents will become honorary Aucklanders, whether they like it or not, when the Covid-19 lockdown borders are locked in and everyone south of Auckland drops into alert level 3.
Being co-opted into the super city means two more weeks at level 4, while some of their neighbours just across the street will be down to level 3.
Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson is welcoming the lockdown border, which is further south than official regional boundaries, but he says splitting the border down the middle of a road like Koheroa Rd is “absolutely ridiculous”.
He said it would be more practical to make all residents on such boundary roads in one lockdown region or the other.
“In discussions I've had with the police today, police are going to treat these roads as everybody being there being on level four.
“So my message to the wider community in these areas is make sure you carry two things: one is a level of something to be able to identify yourself, and that can be a driver's license, a firearms license or a passport or something that's got both the name and photo on it.
“The second thing is carry something that identifies your address, within that area.”
