Political editor's analysis on New Lynn terror attacker's status

From Checkpoint, 6:10 pm on 3 September 2021

A violent extremist and a known threat to New Zealand who was under constant surveillance has brought terror to an Auckland supermarket.

Six people were injured by the man after he entered the Countdown at LynnMall and obtained a knife within the store at around 2.30pm on Friday.

He was shot and killed by police within 60 seconds of the attack unfolding.

The Prime Minister said the man was an ISIS inspired Sri Lankan national who arrived in New Zealand in 2011.

She described the man as a lone wolf violent extremist and described the incident as a despicable, hateful attack, that was wrong.

RNZ political editor Jane Patterson joins Lisa Owen with her analysis.
