Meal kits are increasingly popular in New Zealand - now a new kid on the block is catering to budget-conscious students.
Feed my Flat is the brainchild of Otago University nutrition researcher Kimberley Ti.
She talks to Checkpoint's Lisa Owen about the concept.
Ti tells Checkpoint's Lisa Owen that the idea was born at a potluck dinner where people were reminiscing about horrific student food fails, such as the guy who ate raw bacon for weeks before realising it had to be cooked.
"We somehow ended up talking about our flat meals when we were freshers. It was super funny, well, funny now but not so funny when it happened.
"We had a friend who put dry macaroni with cheese on top straight into the oven and didnt realise that the macaroni has to be cooked."
Ti is understanding, though. Life can be hectic at university and it's easy to end up there without the essential skills for looking after yourself, she says.
To make it easier for Dunedin students to eat well on the cheap, Feed my Flat offers a weekly food bag of 3 meals per week for either 4 people or 6 people that flats can pick up in their own bag from the Department of Human Nutrition. (On the menu this week is pork chops, nachos and a Korean beef bowl.)
Ti is excited that Feed My Flat is starting to get enquiries and orders from students and getting tagged on social media.
Their Instagram page also provides recipes and cooking tips, including how to cut an onion and how to poach eggs:
