Police say the man they shot dead in a quiet Wellington suburb was holding a knife to a woman's throat at the time.
The hostage was treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries, while a child escaped from the house unharmed.
Multiple investigations are underway into the incident. Ruth Hill reports.
