Will tourists return to Rotorua's Fenton St accommodation?

From Checkpoint, 5:17 pm on 1 July 2022

After years of the housing crisis in New Zealand, emergency housing is becoming entrenched on Rotorua's main road - Fenton Street.

Around 40 motels in the tourism hotspot are now being used as emergency accommodation leaving just a handful free for people to book into for a night away.

Now the borders are open and the school holidays are looming.

Rotorua wants to welcome back visitors, but the situation's proving all too much for some.

Nick Truebridge and cameraman Nick Monro have the story.

In a statement in response to the story, the Ministry of Social Development said:

"We are currently working with about 36 suppliers of non-contracted emergency accommodation in Rotorua. Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has also contracted 12 Rotorua motels to provide emergency accommodation.

"The number of households in non-contracted emergency accommodation has reduced since April from about 350 to about 300, which is positive progress.

"Rotorua has high housing deprivation due to generations of under-investment in housing, a shortage of available land, a lack of affordable housing, and a rising population.

"This why there is a major programme of work underway across government aimed at increasing the supply of public housing and improving the affordability and supply of housing for aspiring homeowners. HUD and Kāinga Ora are leading this work."

Also in a statement, HUD said:

"Through the Rotorua Housing Taskforce HUD set up a new model for emergency housing provision where motels are directly contracted by government, with dedicated accommodation for family groups and wraparound services.

"This approach is working well with over 120 contracted emergency housing whānau supported into other accommodation including private rentals, Transitional and Public Housing since 1 July 2021.

So far Government delivered 73 public and 76 additional transitional homes, with 263 public homes planned or under construction by Kāinga Ora and 29 being delivered by Community Housing Providers and Iwi."
