Consumer Affairs Minister David Clark says the Grocery Commissioner will have powers to fine supermarkets, and he's looking into what those fines will be. He said taking a percentage of turnover has "certainly kept bigger players on their toes in the UK".
The new Commissioner will also be able to implement compulsory undertakings, to take court action, publish advice they're giving the big supermarket companies. Legislation will be introduced to Parliament later in 2022.
Clark said he'll stake his job on consumers getting a fairer deal at the checkout.
