The family of a Kiwi soldier killed in Ukraine have paid tribute to a man they say lived a life of a hero.
Corporal Dominic Abelen has been named as the New Zealand soldier killed on the frontline, while on unpaid leave.
The Defence Force says it does not know how many off-duty New Zealand soldiers are fighting in Ukraine.
The government is now trying to work out how get the 30-year-old's body home.
