Survey of 1000 people shows 65% would support Capital Gains Tax
A new survey shows the tax tide could be turning. An IPSOS survey of 1003 people this month shows 65 percent of those questioned would support a Capital Gains Tax or CGT. That is tax on profits made from the sale of an asset, like a house farm, business or even a yacht. Dig deeper and things arguably get a little less clear cut. 57 percent support a CGT on an investment property, 43 percent would support it on the sale of a business. 22 percent say yes to a CGT on assets like boats cars or art and only 13 percent support it on a family home. This is in contrast to a One News Varian poll last year that saw support for CGT at just 52 percent. The issue has been a political hot potato, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon laughed off calls from a bank CEO for capital gains tax, and Labour's previously flip flopped between supporting it and not. Tax specialist, Terry Baucher spoke to Lisa Owen.
