Proposed cuts to tertiary apprenticeship programme in Rotorua

Proposed cuts to a tertiary apprenticeship training programme in Rotorua could leave dozens of people high and dry part way through their qualifications. The proposal from Bay of Plenty's Toi Ohomai institute of technology would mean up to 20 job losses according to the Tertiary Education union. The Union claims a number of courses across campuses in Taupo, Tokoroa, Rotorua, Tauranga and Whakatane include timber machining, forest management, social and youth work and rehabilitation studies. It said the cuts could mean the complete closure of the Waipa campus in Rotorua; a dedicated training facility that currently operates a working wood manufacturing plant.
