If you're looking for John Douglas mid-winter, just drive slowly down the vines of his five hectare vineyard in Wairarapa wine country and you're sure to spot him in one of the rows, snips in hand.
The former psychiatric nurse, with his wife Katherine Gouldstone, planted the first of the vines in 1996 on Te Muna Road, east of Martinborough.
John, known as one of the pioneers of the area, is hands-on in every aspect of Te Hera, certified organic in 2013, and we'll be returning there over the coming year to get to know the workings of the vineyard and the winery.
When Sally visited last week John was hard at work getting the last of his vines pruned.
