George Nelson is a New Zealander living in Japan with a passion for haiku, techno and fashion. Shortly after moving to Tokyo he was scouted on the popular Shibuya scramble crossing and asked to model for Tokyo fashion week.
Nelson first began writing haiku in 2015, while bored in Japanese class. His words were intended to be Hip hop lyrics but he quickly realised he was a better poet than a rapper.
His book, The Techno Kiwi is a nest for all of his interests and follows a kiwi’s quest to find its favourite party.
The pages of, The Techno Kiwi reveal a delightful fusion of both Japanese and New Zealand cultures, using native New Zealand birds, techno and hip hop, Japanese and English.
George Nelson also illustrated the book by painting in watercolour and printing with Risograph.
Culture 101’s Maggie Tweedie spoke with George Nelson in Tokyo about his love for techno parties and writing in five, seven, five.
