For Daimon Schwalger aka artist and celebrated electronic artist The Nomad, moving to Westport on Te Wai Pounamu South Island’s West Coast was a deliberate ploy to enjoy more isolation.
Yet the event organiser hasn’t been able to help himself, organising a few major community events as well as heading a video and photography production company there.
He joins Culture 101’s Mark Amery for this week’s Regional Wrap.
Schwalger has picked a few favourite Westport artists to share the love for. Like Daimon - who has been touring to celebrate The Nomad’s 25th anniversary - they travel from the West Coast far and wide for their work.
Painter Lance Kerr Kerr went to Japan in 2019 and in 2022 was selected for a group show of international artists called Little Treasures in Italy. In 2023, he took part in an art fair in Venice called Visions.
Kerr, Daimon says, is a qualified Qigong teacher, interested in how the ancient somatic practice enhances his creativity.
Daimon also highlights the painting of the self-taught Salu Acklin, whose worldview she says is filtered through
the lens of her cultural heritage: of Rarotongan, Samoan, Scottish and Tongan descent but raised in Alexandra, Central Otago.
