It’s 50 years since potter and railway enthusiast Barry Brickell started the Driving Creek Railway in Coromandel Town, an out-of-the-box combination of ecological restoration, miniature railway and ceramic artists residency.
It’s become a magnet for tourists and artists alike, and a key part of a town where the arts play a major role.
This coming month Driving Creek is celebrated in Bruce Foster's film at Doc Edge Festival, Spontaneous Combustion. While Barry Brickell passed away in 2016, his spirit, in this work, truly chuffs on.
Pete Sephton was a friend of Barry's and is a trustee of Driving Creek. He's a screen print artist, very involved in the annual Coromandel Arts Tour in October and township support group Artists in the Making.
Pete joins Culture 101 to celebrate all things cultural in Coromandel Town.
