Bouncing off the success from the first season, documentary Takeout Kids is back for a second season and this time, it’s venturing beyond the takeaways.

The documentary series features five episodes, each 10-minutes long, and follows young people as they balance school, friends, homework and family life while growing up in their family-owned business and shops.
Similar to season one, it celebrates food and whanau and gives audiences a glimpse into the phenomenon of young people hanging around their family businesses.
Filmed with five rangatahi spread across Aotearoa New Zealand, the new season, starting on Tuesday 20 August, will feature a dairy, nail shop, a takeaway, restaurants and night markets.
Director Julie Zhu has a keen interest in telling migrants and intergenerational stories. She has also co-directed and co-hosted RNZ podcast Conversations With My Immigrant Parents and was one of the featured directors on anthology feature film, Kāinga.
Culture 101 spoke to Zhu and Seven-year-old Kyla, from Whakatāne, whose family owns a nail shop in town.
