The Australian classic My Island Home has become an anthem of sorts for the country. It was originally performed by the Warumpi Band in 1987 and later released by Christine Anu in 1995 - becoming an immediate hit. It became the unofficial anthem when Anu performed the song at the Sydney Olympics closing ceremony in 2000. Now, 30 years later, world music artist Mitch Tambo and his wife - Voice of Lele have released their version of the anthem in a powerful duet. A First Nations person, Mitch has incorporated his indigenous language Gamilaraay, while Lele, a West Papuan refugee sings in English. For both, it's been a chance to honour their different but deep connections to Australia. Aside from the duet, the artists have also released their solo versions, singing in their indigenous languages. Tambo has a version in full Gamilaraay while Lele sings in her native Tok Pisin. Mitch Tambo spoke to Culture 101.
