Should pensioner housing tenants be allowed to keep pet birds?
Should pensioner housing tenants be allowed to keep pet birds? For residents at a pensioner housing block in Whanganui it's all a bit up in the air. Residents knew they weren't allowed to keep cats or dogs in their council owned homes, but didn't realise the policy extended to birds including budgies and finches. After one tenant queried this with the Mayor, she was told there'd been complaints and tenants were sent orders to get rid of their pet birds by today or face 90 day notices on their tenancies. Their plight sparked debate in the local community, with councillor Josh Chandulal-MacKay calling for a review of the policy. Indira Stewart spoke to Mr Chandulal-MacKay and asked him who had complained about the birds.
