Guided tours in Hunua ranges to see rare kokako

From First Up, 5:39 am on 18 September 2019

Have you ever wanted to see a kokako up close and personal? Well there are now guided tours by Auckland Council and the Department of Conservation in the Hunua Ranges for the general public to take a look at the threatened bird species. It hasn't been easy for the kokako, with only about 20 of them left in the area in 1994. But the small population has been growing and the birds with electric blue wattles are making a comeback. The senior ranger of conservation for southern Auckland parks, Miranda Bennett, told our reporter Jessie Chiang how they managed to increase kokako to over 250 birds, despite having just one breeding pair to begin with.
