Car Importers worried about extra cost to ship to Northland if Port goes ahead
Car importers say cars could cost hundreds of dollars more if they're brought into the country via Northland instead of Auckland. The government is considering a report that's recommended moving Ports of Auckland's freight operation to Northport near Whangārei. It says that would free up the Waitematā Harbour and unclog the inner city roads which will have far fewer trucks on them. About 300-thousand cars are imported through Auckland each year and the Motor Industry Association's chief executive David Crawford told reporter Rowan Quinn that shifting that to Northland makes no sense.
