NZ reaction to Hong Kong protects values

New Zealand risked slipping into a master and servant relationship with China had it not taken action to support Hong Kong, says one academic. On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced New Zealand would no longer extradite accused criminals to Hong Kong, saying the territory's judicial system is now not sufficiently independent from mainland China. New Zealand took its time to make the decision but is now following in the steps of Australia, U.K. Canada and the U.S. Beijing has told Wellington to immediately stop interfering in its internal matters. But Robert Patman, a professor of International Relations at Otago University says New Zealand needed to protect its values.
